Our History

Set on 87 acres at the base of Chamcook Mountain, overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay and Ministers Island, Rossmount Inn is a place shaped by both landscape and legacy.

Originally part of the Townsend estate, the property was reimagined in 1889 when James A. Townsend built a private residence in the Queen Anne style. With its sweeping veranda, detailed woodwork, and expansive grounds, it quickly became one of the area’s most distinguished homes. The original carriage house still stands today as a quiet link to that era.

In 1902, Henry Phipps Ross and his wife Sarah discovered the property during a visit to the region and were captivated by its setting. Renamed “Rossmount,” the estate became the centre of their lives, known for its gardens, gatherings, and warm hospitality. Their legacy of welcoming guests and celebrating the surrounding landscape remains at the heart of Rossmount today.

Following a fire in 1961, the present Inn was thoughtfully rebuilt on the original foundation, preserving key architectural elements while introducing carefully sourced furnishings and details from around the world.

Today, Rossmount continues to honour its history, offering a timeless setting where heritage, hospitality, and place come together with quiet elegance.
